A workout app that works offline, because gyms are basements

· updated September 16, 2026

A lot of gyms are in basements, car parks and old warehouses. The signal drops at the door, and a workout app that needs the internet turns into a spinning wheel between sets. GymAI is designed as an offline workout app from the start, on the opposite assumption: no signal is normal.

What works with no connection

  • Logging your sets: weight, reps and how the set felt.
  • Rest timing between sets.
  • The plan itself: what comes next, and the weight it suggests.

When your phone finds a connection again, the session reconciles on its own. You do not have to remember to sync, and a lost signal does not mean a lost workout.

Why an offline workout app matters more than it sounds

A plan that adjusts to what you did is only as good as the record of what you did. If logging fails in the middle of a session, people stop logging, and the plan goes back to being a guess. Working offline is what keeps the history honest.

It also means the screens are built for the moment you will hold them: at arm’s length, on a rack, with chalk on your hands. Two answers at thumb height, and the weight on each side of the bar already worked out.

A session with no bars on your phone

Picture a normal evening in a basement gym. You open the app on the stairs, before the signal goes. From there on, everything you need is already on your phone.

  1. The plan shows your first exercise and the weight it suggests, taken from your own history rather than a template.
  2. You load the bar using the plate maths shown per side.
  3. After the set, the app asks Did you manage it? and you answer with one tap, for example Could have done more or Did exactly that.
  4. The rest timer runs, and the next set is ready when you are.
  5. Back on the street, the phone reconnects and the session reconciles by itself.

At no point do you wait for a page to load, and at no point does a missing connection decide whether a set gets recorded.

Less data leaving your phone

Working offline fits the way GymAI treats your data in general. There is no advertising, no telemetry and no third-party calls: no outside scripts, no pixels, no cookies that are not ours. Some of what you record, such as body measurements, pain history, missed-session reasons and custom activities, is sealed with a key only you hold. Your training history, the sets and weights, is protected by access control rather than by that key.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to press a sync button after training?

No. When your phone is back online, the session reconciles on its own.

Will the plan still adjust my weights offline?

Yes. The plan works with no signal, including the weight it suggests for what comes next.

Can I use it today?

Not yet. The app is coming with the first release. The engine behind it is built and tested, and the exercise imagery is not in yet.
